Meta Snapshot 5/25/2026

Hello fellow 40K enthusiasts! The Memorial Day weekend was a big one for 40K events, with 25 multi-day events attended by a total of 2066 players. That much 40K being played gives a pretty good example of the current state of the meta. I'm less than thrilled to say the meta is pretty bad at the moment.

Once again, the Top Faction of the weekend is Chaos Space Marines, with Defiler-heavy lists distorting the meta something awful. CSMs had a total of 16 Top Three placings, with a full 14 of those being Pactbound Zealots lists. Here's a table with the breakdown by detachment and placing

These placements are across the full spectrum of events, large and small. Defiler-Zealot lists won the German Super Major with 0ver 250 players, took 2nd and 3rd places at the Bristol Super Major with over 300 players, and second at the Dallas Open with almost 300 players. One event, the CTC 2026 Warhammer 40k Championship Open, had Defiler-Zealot lists sweep the top three places. Defiler-Zealot lists got twice as many top three placings as all the detachments of the next-most successful faction, and won as many events as the third place faction placed in the top three. I wish Games Workshop would do an emergency balance pass and tack an extra 50 points to Defilers' cost (and that probably isn't enough), but I anticipate suffering the meta in this state until 11th edition drops. Hopefully it'll drop sooner in June than later. I'm just sick of Pactbound Zealots Defiler lists sucking all the oxygen out of the meta.

So anyway I just looked at all the event winning lists for my samples to discuss what to expect if you see Chaos Marines across the table from you. For starters, you can expect at least 2 Defilers, and don't be surprised to see 3. The Defiler is fast, tough, shoots hard, punches hard, can walk through terrain and models (friend or foe), and is seriously undercosted. Expect them all to have the Mark of Nurgle to get Crit 5's for Sustained Hits when they Dark Pact.

Beyond Defilers, you could see a pretty wide spectrum of lists. Chaos Marines have a deep bench of units - they were a top three faction before overpowered Defilers were introduced to the mix. Expect to see some manner of punchy Infantry unit - Chosen and Possessed are common picks. Abaddon is a likely sight as well, as he gives full Hit rerolls to friendly units within 6" of him. Helbrutes popped up in a majority of the lists as well - they allow nearby units to get both benefits when they Dark Pact. If you see a Helbrute in your opponent's list and you're not sure you'll be able to pop a Defiler, it's likely worth popping the Helbrute instead.

The Number Two faction of the week sees Necrons return to the Top Three, with 8 top three finishes distributed as follows:

2nd111

Eight top three finishes is rather a lot in this meta, double or more than double of any faction outside of the Top Three factions. I think it's fair to say it indicates that Necrons are overpowered, as they have been pretty much the whole edition, but are seriously overshadowed by Chaos Marines. If we could ask for one nerf, we'd ask for a Defiler nerf. If we could ask for two...probably C'tan, but not certainly.

C'tan are in all the top three lists, but how many depends on the detachment. The Starshatter Arsenal lists each only had 1, which I don't find surprising, as the bones of a Starshatter list are The Silent King and a trio of Doomsday Arks. The Pantheon of Woe list had the most, with all three of the named C'tan and a Transcendent as well. The two Cursed Legion lists had all three of the named C'tan, and the rest had 2 of the named C'tan. Basically if you're teching into Necrons, expect C'tan.

Beyond that, I can't tell you much. Necrons are another army with a deep bench, and as you can see from the spread of detachments than got top three results, the army supports a lot of playstyles. The Starshatter Arsenal list is pretty predictable, but you may see anything in the codex in a Necron list.

The Number Three faction of the week is T'au Empire. I've been hearing about how strong T'au are on Art of War podcasts lately, but haven't seen them popping up in the meta that much since I started keeping track of it, but here they are now, with 6 top three results, 2 each first, second, and third places. All but one second place finish are Mont'ka, with the outlier being Retaliation Cadre.

I'm setting two of the T'au lists aside (the Ret Cad list and one of the 3rd place lists) because they were played at a very casual event with both of them having a significant number of points on Legends units. Even taking those out though, T'au are still the clear Number Three faction.

These high performing lists all have a lot in common. All of them have the Twin Lance, a Ghostkeel, at least one squad of Pathfinders (most had two, one had three), two squads of Stealth Suits, and a trio of Riptides. The other 600 or so points was spent according to the tastes of the individual players, though all of them did include at least one or two more shooting platforms. Two used a full squad of Broadsides with high yield missile pods, one used a pair of single Broadsides with rail rifles, and one of the 1st place lists had a pair of Hammerheads, with one of each of the main guns.

After T'au, we get into also-ran territory, with only two other factions scoring more than 3 top three placements, and most scoring less than that.  The drop-off is pretty sharp, so I'm skipping listing out the also-rans. In the interest of time, I'm skipping the event list too. Otherwise, I might not get this article out this week at all. I hope you found this article informative and entertaining. Good luck in your future games, fellow enthusiasts! May all your games be fun ones!
