Lists of the Week: LVO 2025

Good day battle brethren! Las Vegas Open, the biggest Warhammer 40K event of the year, was held this past weekend. Unfortunately, no Dark Angels lists were in particular danger of winning the event this year, but a number of Dark Angels lists did well enough to rate some attention, so I thought I'd dedicate an article specifically to them. I may wind up having to play catchup on the rest of the lists from last weekend that deserve our attention, but I promise not to overlook them.

If you happen to go through the results from LVO yourself, the first entry you'll get to is Jeremy Atkinson's, who placed 37th. Unfortunately, when I clicked to see the list, it turned out to actually be an Ultramarines list. Boo! I bring it up so you brethren won't think I overlooked it.

I'm going to review the lists that made it into the top 20% of the placings, which is a lot, plus the next one down after that because it's an Unforgiven Task Force, and it's just interesting to see one of those manage to rise so high.

The best performing Dark Angels list at LVO 2025 was played by Robert Moreau, who went 5-1 and placed 65th, which doesn't sound very impressive, but keep in mind this was an event with over 1000 players. Robert played something not on my Bingo card by taking a Librarius Conclave.  You can see Robert's list on BCP. The short version is below.

We're all in the hoods now
Azrael - Warlord
Librarian: Prescience
Librarian
Librarian: Fusillade
Librarian in Terminator Armour
Librarian in Terminator Armour: Celerity
Intercessor Squad: 5 bolter boys
Deathwing Knights: 5 awesome chonky macey boys
Deathwing Knights: 5 awesome chonky macey boys
Inner Circle Companions: 6 spooky awesome swordy boys
Inner Circle Companions: 6 spooky awesome swordy boys
Scout Squad: 5 sneaky lads
Scout Squad: 5 sneaky lads
Sternguard Veteran Squad: 10 awesome bolter boys

I had to look up what the Librarius Conclave does. Since I'm not trying to embed a review of it in this article, I'll just link you the detachment so you can see it for yourself. The really short version is, Librarians be doing cool psychic shit. The detachment rule has the player choose from a list of 5 psychic disciplines to be active each turn, with each one granting buffs to units with Librarians attached. The enhancements all have a base ability they grant, with additional effects when particular disciplines are active. This is relevant because it informs who's apt to be attached to what.

The Prescience Librarian grants a reactive move, so that seems to make him a good candidate to attach to Inner Circle Companions. The Fusillade Librarian grants his squad Anti-Monster-Vehicle 5+, which makes him an obvious candidate to attach to the Sternguard, effectively doubling the amount of Devastating Wounds Robert can expect from the units against those targets, and that was already a pretty respectable amount. He also grants either Sustained Hits 1 or +6" to gun range depending on which Discpline is active. Spicy!

The two Terminator Librarians obviously get attached to the Deathwing Knights. Celerity grants Advance+Charge, and conditionally Fall Back+Charge, so you can see how that'd be good for DWKs. I imagine Azrael probably gets attached to the other ICC squad, and the last Librarian just joins the Intercessors to grant them the 4++ and hang out in the backfield.

There are numerous upsides to this list. Everything but the Scouts gets a 4++ save, and there's a lot of Sustained Hits, between the FusilLibrarian, Azrael, and the two Terminator Librarians. The Psychic Disciplines are kind of like the Gladius' Combat Doctrines, but unlike Combat Doctrines, they can be reused from turn-to-turn, so Robert never had a turn where he didn't have a Discipline active. There's a good set of strats, some of which only require that a Librarian be within 18" of the affected unit, which is pretty easy to arrange. There are also going to be matchups where most of the units in the army having a 4+++ against Psychic attacks is going to be very relevant.

The downsides to Robert's list are having to spend almost 350 points on Librarians, who have not thus far been spicy enough to make us often want to spend points on them; and the fact that the list doesn't do much for Vehicles or Monsters, so your tanks and Dreads and Lion Dad are better served by other detachments. To deal with bigger tougher targets, Robert either had to Mortal them out with the Sternguard, or have things run up and punch them to death. That said, that worked for him well enough to make it into the top 10% at LVO, so I'm not scoffing at it.

Robert started very strong, crushing Orks 100-47 in the 1st round. 2nd round. Oddly I couldn't find an entry for his 2nd round game, but according to the Placings page, he took his loss in this round, but still scored 70 points. Perhaps it was redacted by the Inner Circle! 3rd round he handily beat Tyranids 95-68. 4th round he had another convincing win, 97-62 against Necrons. 5th round he enjoyed a comfortble 96-71 win against Tyranids. 6th round he ended strong with a crushing 100-50 against Thousand Sons.

The next highest performing Dark Angels list was played by Micah Morris, who went 5-1 with a Stormlance Task Force and placed 79th. It's definitely appearing that Stormlance is the new black! You can see Micah's list on BCP. The short version is below.

Deathwing Knights: 5 chonky macey boys

Incursors: 5 choppy spotty boys
Infiltrators: 5 stay-off-my-lawn boys
Outriders: 3 biker boys
Vindicator
Vindicator

This is an interesting Stormlance list because it doesn't lean as hard into punching things as some of the Stormlances we've seen. Micah included a robust shooting element despite the fact that the Stormlance does very little for shooting units. He's including them on the strength of their datasheets alone. His choices give him a nice front-shooting/back shooting dispersal, with him having the option of parking Vindicators on midfield objectives and blasting away, with the Ballisti shooting from the back, and the Deathwing Knights advancing forward to go punch the enemy. His opponent is also obliged to chew through a lot of 2+ saves, which was probably a design consideration.

Micah's list seems a little thin on utility units. He does have the Combi-Lieutenant, but that doesn't uppy-downy. I suppose Azrael and the Intercessors can do secondaries. I guess they're mostly in there to provide CP and sticky objectives, so he's not losing much committing them to scoring Secondaries. He could use Sammy and the Outriders too, but I imagine their primary purpose is to have something to exploit the detachment's Mounted-keyworded strats and fling Sammy at things that Damage-3 attacks will pick up better than the DWKs can pick up by themselves.

One final little curious aspect: All Michah's DWK squads' Knight Masters have Relic Weapons. I wonder why Micah made that choice?

Micah started strong, inflicting a 1st round 98-51 pummeling against Necrons. Round 2 he had a close 60-48 win against T'au Empire. 3rd round he took his loss, 41-64 against T'au Empire. 4th round he had a tight 67-57 win against World Eaters. 5th round he crushed Chaos Knights 85-35. 6th round he ended strong with a solid 70-44 win against more World Eaters.

The next list we're looking at is Austin Houvener's Gladius Task Force, which he used to go 5-1 and place 92nd. You can see Austin's list on BCP. The short version is below.

Austin's Gladius Singles

Deathwing Knights: 5 awesome chonky macey boys
Deathwing Knights: 5 awesome chonky macey boys
Deathwing Knights: 5 awesome chonky macey boys
Hellblaster Squad: 5 plasma boys
Infiltrator Squad: 5 stay-off-my-lawn boys
Predator Destructor
Scout Squad: 5 sneaky lads
Storm Speeder Thunderstrike
Callidus Assassin

Austin's list is a fairly conventional DA Gladius with some choices I find interesting, probably mostly because they're not the choices I would have made - which does not make them wrong, just interesting. For instance, I probably would not have included the Predator Destructor and the Assassin. Instead, I'd have used a second Scout Squad and a Gladiator Lancer. That said, the
Callidus can uppy-downy anywhere on the board, whereas Scouts can only come on on table edges, and while the Lancer would undoubtedly be better than a Destructor at killing tanks and monsters, the Destructor gives Austin a tool against 3-wound models, of which there's a fair abundance. I'm also not a fan of the Thunderstrike because its own shooting is underwhelming, but it does help the other shooting elements in the list punch up into vehicles and monsters. I'd have preferred 5 more Hellblasters and maybe some enhancements on the Lieutenants, or maybe upgrade the Destructor to a Lancer, but another thing the Thunderstrike provides is a fast platform Austin can use to jump on objectives early and do wacky shenanigans with if it survives into the later turns. Austin went 5-1 at LVO, so it's hard to argue he should have made different choices.

Austin had a strong start in the 1st round with an 80-43 win against Chaos Daemons. 2nd round he took a tight 78-86 loss against Tyranids. 3rd round he got a squeaker of a win, 81-80 against Space Marines (Raven Guard in particular). 4th round was another fairly close game, 60-48 against Adeptus Custodes. 5th round was similarly close, 70-59 against Grey Knights. He ended with a tight 6th round win, 85-81 against Ultramarines. Man, after that 1st round no one gave Austin an easy win!

After Austin we have repeat offender Alex Vian, who went 4-1-1 with his Gladius Task Force and took 114th place. You can see Alex' list on BCP. The short version is below.

This is another pretty conventional DA Gladius list. Azrael clearly gets teamed up with the ICCs for all sorts of swordy goodness. I'm going to point out we've seen two Ballistus Dreads and a Combi-Lieutenant in all three of our lists thus far. It could just be that they're both fairly efficient datasheets for what they do, but I also think the Combi-Lieutenant helps the Ballisti punch up into T10+ targets. There are a lot of tough 2+ save units in this list, which are challenging for opponents to pick up. It's interesting to see the Inceptors pop up in a list. I guess they came down in points enough for Alex to toss them in. Even a 6" Deep Strike is still a pretty close Deep Strike, and bolter Inceptors are quite handy against a lot of targets. They're also a pretty good unit to Overwatch with, because every 6 To Hit generates 3 hits that are twin-linked. Keep an eye on how many CP your opponent has if you ever have to move a unit past bolter Inceptors.

I'm going to stop doing the full breakdown of games at this point because BCP is struggling to provide me the information, no doubt due to how many listings there are for LVO. 1st round Alex got 95 points for a win against Adeptus Mechanicus. 2nd round he scored 61 points but took a loss against Ultramarines.  3rd round he got 95 points for a win versus Shatterstar Necrons. 4th round was his 80-80 tie versus Chaos Knights. 5th round he scored 87 points for a win against T'au Mont'ka. 6th round he scored 83 points for a win against Grey Knights.

Next up in 120th place we have Nicholas "Ordice" Henry, who went 4-2 with a Gladius Task Force. You can see Nicholas' list on BCP and below.

"The Risen"
Azrael - Warlord
Librarian
Lieutenant with Combi-weapon
Intercessor Squad: 5 bolter boys
Assault Intercessors with Jump Packs: 5 flying choppy boys

Gladiator Lancer
Inner Circle Companions: 6 spooky awesome swordy boys
Repulsor Executioner
Scout Squad: 5 sneaky lads
Scout Squad: 5 sneaky lads
Sternguard Veteran Squad: 10 awesome bolter boys
Vindicator

When I saw this list, I got excited to see the Sternguard in particular. Though not a Dark Angels specific unit, Sternguard are quite spicy with their recent glow-up, and are a solid alternative to Hellblasters to attach Azrael to.

In case you don't know, their guns have Devastating Wounds, and you have a choice between Sternguard bolt rifles with 24" range 2-shot Rapid Fire 1, or Combi-weapons with 24" range, 1 shot Rapid Fire 1 and Anti-Infantry 4+. Also, their Sternguard Focus Datasheet rule rants full To-Wound rerolls on the Oath target. With Azrael attached, my rough mental math suggests a squad of bolt rifle Sternies will inflict 9 Devastating Wounds to a target within 12", not counting Azrael's output. That's any target - Infantry, Mounted, Vehicle, Monster, whatever. Combi-weapon Sternguard will "only" do about 5-6 MWs against most targets, but will inflict a whopping 15 against Infantry, and there are certainly a lot of Infantry targets currently in the game worth turning that kind of attention to.  Nicholas used bolt rifle Sternies, which is objectively the right choice, but I happen to have 11 robed Dark Angels Veterans with combi-weapons from back in the 7th ed day when I used them as sergeants in my Battle Company list, so guess what those guys get to be now!

Sternies are not to be discounted in assault either. They have base 4 attacks, and a Sergeant with a bolt rifle can take an upgraded close combat weapon, and they reroll Wound rolls against the Oath target in the Assault phase as well as in the Shooting phase. A full squad of 10 Sternguard cost 30 points less than the same sized squad of Hellblasters, and they don't need another character attached to get peak performance, because you want to roll To Wound rolls to proc Devastating Wounds, so there's no need to attach a Lieutenant to the squad.

Anyway, gushing about Sternguard aside, the list is fairly conventional. The ICCs clearly ride in the Repulsor Executioner and pop out as needed, or Squad Tactics their way back inside when the occasion warrants. Given the RepEx to ride around in, it doesn't seem like they particularly need the Librarian for the 4++. I might have attached the Judiciar to them for the Fights First, but I'm not the guy who went 4-2 at LVO.

Something to note about Nicholas' record, his losses were his last 2 games, so he went 4-0 for his first four games, which is a metric Stat-check.com uses to measure faction performance.  1st round he scored 97 points for a win vs Adeptus Sororitas. 2nd round He scored 73 points for a win against Orks. 3rd round he scored 100 points for a win against Imperial Knights. 4th round  he racked up a 96 points nfor a win against Black Templars. 5th round he scored 66 points but took a loss against T'au. 6th round he endured a loss against Leagues of Votann, scoring 55 points in the process.

Next up, coming in at 122nd place is Tanner Floyd, who went 4-2 with a Stormlance Task Force.  Here's Tanner's list on BCP and below.

Initial D-W
Lion Dad - Warlord
Azrael
Chaplain on Bike: Fury of the Storm
Sammael
Intercessor Squad: 5 bolter boys
Assault Intercessors with Jump Packs: 5 flying choppy boys
Assault Intercessors with Jump Packs: 5 flying choppy boys
Deathwing Knights: 5 awesome chonky macey boys
Deathwing Knights: 5 awesome chonky macey boys
Deathwing Knights: 5 awesome chonky macey boys
Inner Circle Companions: 6 spooky awesome swordy boys
Outrider Squad: 3 choppy biker boys
Outrider Squad: 3 choppy biker boys

As you can see, Tanner went all-in on punching things to death, with diverse flavors of punchy death to offer to his opponents. A challenge with our punchy lists is that a lot of our best assault units have Damage 2 weapons, whose output really suffers from damage-reducing effects. Having Lion Dad in the list helps with that, as do Sammael and the bike Chaplain attached to the Outrider Squads. Tanner mitigates the weak AP of the Chaplain's crozius with the Fury of the Storm enhancement, giving him increased Strength to boot. The Mounted units also give Tanner some units to target with all the Mounted-keyworded strats in the Stormlance, giving him more options during play.

Tanner's list is a little light on dedicated utility units, with just the Intercessors to mind the backfield objective, and no uppy-downy Scouts. For 20 points more, the Jump Intercessors can fill that role while also having more offensive punch. It doesn't hurt they have a 12" move and 3+ save either.

Tanner started strong in the 1st round, scoring 100 points for a win over Iron Hands. 2nd round he scored 74 points for a win over Aeldari. 3rd round he scored 100 points for a win versus Drukhari. 4th round he scored only 41 points for a bruising loss against Mark Hertel's Deathwatch - Mark wound up taking 1st place, so there's no shame there. 5th round was a 77 point loss against Astra Militarum. He ended strong with a 6th round 73 point win against Space Wolves.

Literally one place down from Tanner, in 123rd place we have Jeff Jew, who went 4-2 with a Gladius Task Force. You can see Jeff's list on BCP and below.

This is an interesting variation on the typical DA Gladius. For starters Jeff included Sammael and a unit of 3 Outriders for him to lead into glorious melee. It gives him a unit that can natively Advance and Charge, and on the charge Sammy will be swinging 3 Damage, which is handy for picking up heavy 3-wound Infantry. The other interesting inclusion is the Reivers, whose main utility comes from their Terror Troops ability, debuffing nearby enemy OC. This doesn't require them to shoot or be engaged in combat, so they can just scoot up next to a unit the Deathwing Knights are keeping busy and turn down their OC while possibly performing a handy action. They have Deep Strike and ignore terrain movement modifiers too, and are only 10 more points than Scouts, so they're definitely worth looking at as a utility unit.

Man! I'm going to have to get some Reivers. The models are so goofy looking though. I'll have to think about a kitbash.

Jeff, like Nicholas, had a 4-0 event start. He started very strong with a 1st round win, scoring 100 points versus Necrons. 2nd round he scored 84 points for a win against Aeldari. 3rd round was another 100 points for a win against Thousand Sons. 4th round was a very solid 96 points for a win against yet more Necrons (I guess Jeff really has it dialed in against Necrons).  5th round he took a loss while scoring 82 points against Genestealer Cults. Sadly, 6th round he had his lowest score, 68 points for a loss against Leagues of Votann.

The last list that makes my upper 20% cut was played by Jon Camacho, who went 4-2 and took 127th place with his Company of Hunters (Yay!). You can see Jon's list on BCP and below.

Bikes 2
Azrael - Warlord
Chaplain on Bike: Recon Hunter
Lieutenant with Combi-weapon

Scout Squad: 5 sneaky lads
Scout Squad: 5 sneaky lads
Storm Speeder Hammerstrike
Storm Speeder Thunderstrike
Culexus Assassin

Man, my dude Jon has more bikes than I do! Though only because he's got those ATVs and I haven't assembled my Bike Chaplain yet. One interesting aspect to this list is that it's not definitely clear where all the Mounted characters are going to go. I imagine the default setup is to attach the Chaplain to an Outrider squad, because he confers Devastating Wounds on shooting attacks all those bolt rifles are natively Twin Linked, so they're apt to score 3-4 Mortal Wounds on whatever they shoot at, and maybe occasionally Jon gets lucky and procs Dev Wounds on a multimelta hit. However, if Jon is playing an opponent who doesn't have a lot of Monsters or Vehicles and instead is playing into an opponent with a lot of T6+ Infantry or Mounted units, he might attach the Chaplain to Black Knights to grant them + 1 To Wound on their corvus hammers Black Knight combat weapons.

I'm thinking Jon probably typically uses the Thunderstrike and the Hammerstrike as a 1-2 combo on big targets, leading with the Thunderstrike to proc +1 to wound, so the Hammerstrike can wound on 4+ against T10+ targets with its five D6 damage shots. The Hammerstrike can at the same time buff Black Knight shooting into another target by tagging it with its Krakstorm launcher and strip cover from something Jon is going to light up with plasma talons.

The Culexus Assassin was an interesting choice. The Callidus is generally a more conventional choice, but the Culexus does have a 6" Deep Strike ability, and also a once-per-game 9" Battleshock aura that if Jon can get him positioned right can really play havoc with his opponent's scoring the turn it's triggered. Also, if he happens to play into a heavily psychic army like Thousand Sons or non-Khorne flavors of Chaos Daemons, the Culexus has a lot of abilities that will be relevant in that matchup. With a new Codex: Aeldari coming out, the Culexus may become a more meta choice.

I will offer one small criticism of Jon's list - if he'd made one of his Mounted characters his Warlord (particularly his Champion with Mounted Strategist), he'd have given himself a strong setup to score the Command Insertion Secret Mission, what with being able to pop them in Reserve with Rapid Reappraisal and then pop out with +1 to Charge and rerolling the distance into whatever weedy unit his opponents stick in their backfield. There is absolutely no reason not to give yourself that option.

Jon started strong with a 1st round win against Astra Militarum, scoring 100 points. 2nd round he racked up an 86 points for the win against Chaos Marines. 3rd round he scored another 100 points for the win against Tyranids. 4th round he scored 27 points for a crushing loss against Ultramarines. 5th round was a less punishing, scoring 70 points for a loss against Necrons. 6th round he ended strong though, scoring 100 points to gain the win over Chaos Daemons.

Those are all the lists that made it into the top 20% at LVO, but I'm reviewing one more, because one big damn hero among us, Brandon Blair, went 4-2 with an Unforgiven Task Force! I'll bend my rules for that one, and he didn't miss the cut by much anyway, being the next-highest scoring DA player at 227th place. You can see Brandon's list on BCP and below.

ALPHA LVO
Azrael - Warlord
Librarian
Lieutenant with Combi-weapon
Intercessor Squad: 5 bolter boys
Assault Intercessors with Jump Packs: 5 flying choppy boys
Assault Intercessors with Jump Packs: 5 flying choppy boys

Hellblaster Squad: 10 plasma boys
Infiltrator Squad: 5 stay-off-my-lawn boys
Inner Circle Companions: 6 spooky awesome swordy boys
Scout Squad: 5 sneaky lads

I figured a UTF with a positive record would have a Hellblaster squad in it. The UTF in Grim Retribution has the best retributive shooting strat in any Space Marine detachment, and you get the most bang out of it by using it with Hellblasters. It would really be a disincentive for opponents to shoot at the Hellblasters at all, because they're apt to trigger the full squad shooting at them in their turn - first most of the ones they manage to kill, then all the ones that are still alive, then probably the ones that go down to Hazardous tests. To top it off, all of that shooting is going to have Sustained 1 because Azrael will certainly be attached to that unit. Brandon probably just sticks them on an objective in the open and tells his opponents to go ahead and try it.

If the Hellblasters go unmolested and Brandon gets to shoot with them in his turn, then he can use Fire Discipline to give then Ignores Cover and Unforgiven Fury for Lethal Hits, and for ha-has proccing crits on 5+ if he happens to have a Battle Shocked unit on the table somewhere.  There's not even a guarantee of neutralizing them with assault, because in addition to the 4++ they get from Azrael, if Brandon can afford 2 CP for it he can make his opponent -1 to Wound with Unbreakable Lines and then fall back and shoot the next turn with Intractable.

The Deathwing Knights are set up to clear infantry and mounted units with the sword loadout, with the detachment rule obliging his opponents to really load an objective with OC to ensure they flip it. He's got the Lancers to take down targets the Hellblasters might have trouble with, and Jump Intercessors to run around and cause trouble. The ICCs team up with the Librarian to reinforce whichever objective Brandon needs them to, and he's got his Infiltrators to hold his backfield objectives, Intercessors to sticky objectives, and the Combi-Lieutenant and Scouts to score secondaries. This is probably about as good as an Unforgiven Task Force list can get. My only criticism is that, if he could somehow free up 5 more points, he could drop the Intercessors in favor of an Ancient in Terminator Armour and give him the Pennant of Remembrance, because adding even a 6+++ FNP to Deathwing Knights would be hilarious.

Brandon got off to a rough start, getting dumpstered by Tyranids in the 1st round, only scoring 16 points. Our badass who took a UTF to LVO picked himself up and brought it though, scoring 85 points to pick up a win against Orks. 3rd round he scored 93 points in the process of beating Adeptus Custodes. 4th round his score was a less-impressive 68 points, but it still got him the win against Iron Hands. 5th round he lost to Imperial Knights, but still managed to score a respectable 63 points. He ended strong, scoring 81 points in the 6th round for another win against Adeptus Custodes.

This, battle brethren, is where I'm calling it. There are still a few lists that went 4-2, including a couple Companies of Hunters, but LVO was a week and a half ago and I haven't even looked at the other tournament results from that weekend. I did, however, go through the placings so I could list all the rest of the Dark Angels players, how they placed, and what detachment they used. Not all of them got winning records, but all of them competed at the biggest 40K event in the world, and that deserves some respect.

If you enjoy my work, hunt down that Follow button like it's a member of the Fallen, and as always I'd like to shout out Dank List Wargaming for Dark Angels content by a pair of true enthusiasts. May all of us play our best games and rise to the examples of our LVO competing brethren. For the Lion!
