Best List of the Week: Bret Ebaugh's GTF, and DA at Planet arKCanite
The list in question was run by Bret Ebaugh of Macragge's Crabshack, and interestingly it is not the Ironstorm Spearhead that ran roughshod last weekend. Instead, this one is the bog-standard Gladius Task Force we've had since the Index was released. It's nice to see the Gladius still has legs. Let's take a look at Bret's list and see what we can learn from it.
Apothecary Biologus wt Fire Discipline
Azrael (warlord)
Techmarine
Assault Intercessors: 10 choppy boys
Aggressor Squad: 6 chonky punchy bolter boys
Gladiator Lancer
Gladiator Lancer
Inceptor Squad: 3 bolter boys
Infiltrator Squad: 5 sneaky boys
Land Raider Redeemer
Redemptor Dreadnought
Redemptor Dreadnought
Scout Squad: 5 sneaky lads
Scout Squad: 5 sneaky lads
It's nice to see that Azrael can grab some Greenwing and go wreck face for the Lion and the Emperor. It's pretty straightforward, with units that can exploit all 3 of the Doctrines offered by the Gladius, along with the usual Scouts and Inceptors we see to score secondaries. Infiltrators no doubt sit on the backfield objective, their interdiction field keeping pesky 3" deep strikers from dropping onto it. The one thing I'm not clear on is who goes in the Land Raider, because cases can be made for both the Assault Intercessors and the Aggressors. Similarly, cases can be made for either of those units to NOT be put in the Land Raider. I suppose it affords Bret the flexibility of deciding on a game by game basis, but if I had to guess, I'd say the Assault Intercessors get to ride, and the Aggressors come in from Strategic Reserve. I'm also not sure if the Techmarine hangs out in the backfield with the Gladiators or runs up the field with the Redemptors, but my guess would be the latter.
For his first game, Bret went up against Broc Bowman's World Eaters, a foot list with Angron, Eightbound, and a couple of supporting War Dog Brigands. It was a pretty close game, with Bret winning 81-73.
Game 2, Bret faced an unconventional Necron list piloted by Nathan Martin. Half of Nathans points were sunk into a pair of Seraptek Heavy Constructs. If you've never heard of those things, don't worry, neither had I. I had to look them up. Turns out they're Titanic Walkers with some impressive guns, including a Singularity Generator that is 36" 2D6 S10 AP -3 D4 Blast Devastating Wounds, a Synaptic Obliterator that is 48" 8 S5 AP -1 D2 Sustained Hits 2, and a Transdimensional Projector that is 48" 2 S24 (yes 24) AP -4 D6+4. Their defensive profile is not quite as awesome, though having 24 wounds, they're only T12 3+ 5++ and no special rules that enhance their durability. Regardless, Bret didn't appear to have much problem dealing with them, winning 81-53
Game 3, Bret faced Necrons again, played by Joseph Kirk. This time, the list was more conventional, with the Nightbringer, Imotekh, a Transcendant C'tan, a Monolith, and assorted other Necron stuff. This game was much closer, with Bret squeaking to the win, 89-86.
Game 4 was Bret's one loss for the week. He went up against Joe Guzowski's Orks. Joe's list featured Boss Snikrot, Mozrog Skragbad on his land shark, a couple of Big Meks in Mega Armor, a couple Warbosses, a Battlewagon, 2 chonky mobs of Meganobz, 2 chonky mobs of Nobs, and assorted other Ork stuff. Joe had a lot of stuff for Bret to chew through but still had a lot of units he could task for secondaries, and it showed in the score, with Joe winning 83-70. Next time, xenos scum!
For the final game, Bret faced Rylee McKitterick's T'au list. Rylee's list featured The Prophet of Regret Aun'Va, Shadowsun, 3 Broadsides, 2 Ghostkeels, a Stormsurge, and an assortment of other units. Reading the list, I'd been asking myself "Where are the Crisis Suits?" and then I saw the Stormsurge and I went "Oh." Anyhow, it was another close game, but Bret defended the honor of the First Legion against the filthy xenos, battling to a 87-84 win.
A player can hold his head up high after going 4-1 and scoring 8th place at a 51 player event, even more so by doing it with a list that's different from the Ironstorm that was all over last week's events like a rash. Of Bret's opponents, Broc Bowman actually came in right behind him at 9th place, and the one player Bret lost to, Joe Guzowski, came in next in 10th place, having lost his final game. Rylee McKitterick broke the top 15, going 3-2 to earn 12th place. The Necron players Bret faced had a rougher time, both of them going 2-3. Joe Kirk came in at 29th, and Nathan Martin went to 34th place.
There were a couple other Dark Angels lists at the event. The next highest placed belongs to U.S. Army Esports' Anthony Joyce-Rivera, who came in 20th with an Unforgiven Task Force. His list is kind of interesting, so I'll give the full short version here.
Azrael
Captain in Terminator Armor
Librarian
Intercessor Squad: 5 bolter boys
Deathwing Knights: 5 baroque boys
Hellblaster Squad: 10 plasma boys
Hellblaster Squad: 10 plasma boys
Land Raider
Darkshroud
Darkshroud
Stormraven
Terminator Assault Squad: 5 smashy boys
Kudos to Anthony for trying something different. Looking at this list, I'm supposing Anthony has the 2 squads of Hellblasters advancing on foot, while the Knights and terminator Assault Squad ride in the Land Raider and Stormraven. My immediate thouight when I looked at this is that Anthony probably would have placed better if he'd played this list as a Gladius. He'd have wanted to find some points for Fire Discipline to put on the Librarian, but I'd bet a dollar he could probably drop one of the Darkshrouds without his list suffereing much from it, and then he'd not only be able to afford Fire Discipline, but also at least a squad of Scouts to task to secondaries.
Also representing the First Legion was Jeremy Capko, also of Macrabbe's Crabshack. He tried his luck with an Ironstorm Spearhead, but instead of the usual Stormraven/Repex show, Jeremy came with 3 Redemptors and 2 Ballistuses. He came in almost dead center in 25th place, having gone 2-3, but he scored 94 on his 3rd game loss.
The final DA player at the event was 6 Sigmar's James Berry, who sadly wound up in 44th place. He tried to make a go of using a lot of Deathwing in a Gladius Task Force, but evidently it didn't work as well as he'd hoped, with him losing his first 3 games before finally getting a 100 point win in his 4th, and then it looks like he dropped. His list featured Azrael, a squad of Deathwing Knights, 2 squads of Deathwing Terminators, and the 10 Hellblasters one generally pairs with Azrael, plus the chonky Aggressor Squad with a Biologus and some other diverse characters and units. Hopefully James will find a way to make Deathwing work and get a better result next time.
