First Place for the First Legion at Renegades Open

Good day, battle brothers! I'm pleased to bring you news of our esteemed legion chapter taking first place at a Grand Tournament! This auspicious event took place in the United Kingdom (Cardiff, Wales to be specific), at Renegades Open: Echoes Of War 6, where Chris Lewis of Vale Renegades took a Vanguard Spearhead and went undefeated. Good job, brother Chris!

The Vanguard Spearhead is one of the detachments that Space Marine players seem to be able to lean on to get tournament wins. Chris' list has some conventional choices, but also some I didn't expect to see in a Vanguard. The quick version of his list is as follows:

Azrael
Chaplain in Terminator Armor wt The Blade Driven Deep
Librarian in Phobos Armor wt Ghostweave Cloak
Lieutenant
Centurion Devastator Squad: 6 CentDevs
Deathwing Knights: 10 Knights
Hellblaster Squad: 10 plasma boys
Infiltrator Squad: 5 sneaky boys
Scout Squad: 5 sneaky lads
Scout Squad: 5 sneaky lads
Scout Squad: 5 sneaky lads
Land Raider Redeemer

Aw, yeah, a Land Raider full of Hellblasters, with Azrael and a Lieutenant no less! It's the Redeemer of course - the overwatch potential of the Redeemer is not to be sneezed at. I imagine Chris enjoys rolling 6's with the Hellblasters and having them be both Lethal and Sustained hits - I sure do. There's also the 10 Deathwing Knights. Nice to see 10-strong squads get a last hurrah with a big win. Pairing them up with the Chaplain with The Blade Driven Deep lets Chris plop them on a no-man's-land objective during deployment and tell his opponents come get some Banjo. Having to try and shift 4-wound Terminators with -1 Damage that do 3 damage hits can't be something opponents relish.

The rest of the list is pretty conventional for a Vanguard. There's the big brick of CentDevs that can be picked up and redeployed as needed to get angles on things Chris wanted evaporated. The Phobos Libby with the Ghostweave Cloak gets Lone Operative, so he can run around and can peek out and Smite things without too much fear of reprisal. The Infiltrators doubtless camp on the backfield objective and make it hard to get close to, and the Scouts do what Scouts do - also usually scoring Secondaries. It's worth noting that if Chris ever has a turn where he doesn't need to pick up the CentDevs with Guerilla Tactics, he could instead use the strat to put up to 2 of the Scouts/Infiltrators/Librarian units in Strategic Reserve in his opponent's turn if it's advantageous to do so. Movement tricks win games, and the Vanguard with the right units has hella movement tricks.

On his way to the top, Chris beat Black Templars, Drukhari, Space Wolves, and Adeptus Custodes. His 5th game against Tau was a tie. So Chris didn't quite lay low all before him, but I'm sure not going to argue with a first place result!

There were actually 3 Dark Angels lists at Echoes Of War 6, but the other lists didn't perform nearly as well as Chris'. teammate Jay Sloper took a very unconventional list. It was a Vanguard, but without the expected CentDev brick. The closest he came to having the expected hammer unit he could pick up and redeploy with Guerilla Tactics was a squad of 6 Inceptors, but they were assault bolter boys instead of plasma boys. He also had a couple of Invader ATVs, an Outriders squad, and a 6-man Ravenwing Command Squad.  I'm really puzzled why Jay chose to play this list as a Vanguard. With the units he chose, a Gladius probably would have enhanced them better.

The third Dark Angels army BCP lists as being at the event was an Unforgiven Task Force belonging to Tiefion Jones, but there are no game scores associated with it at all. As such, it's the last place entry at the event. It's kind of an odd list too - it does have Azrael and Hellblasters and a Land Raider for them to ride around in, but there's also a Land Raider Redeemer, and a Stormraven. They presumably acted as rides for a unit of 5 Deathwing Knights and a Terminator Captain, and 5 Assault Intercessors and a Judiciar. The only other units in the list are 5 Infiltrators and a Ballistus Dread. This one is also kind of a head-scratcher, and as there are no scores associated with it, there's no way to tell how it performed. That said, there's a distinct lack of utility units in the list, so I imagine it would struggle to score secondaries.

That said, I always like to see Dark Angels lists at events, and one never knows when someone might stumble onto some new hidden tech, which isn't going to happen if everyone just plays the same list that did well at the last event. I also like to see Dark Angels lists do well, so I want to offer congratulations to Chris Lewis for going undefeated and taking 1rst place! Well done, Chris! Keep up the good work!
