Lists of the Week: Catchup Ball Edition (1/20/2025)

Hello, battle brethren! Here I am catching up with the review backlog caused by the LVO edition. There were other events played that weekend, and three of those events had Dark Angels lists place well.  First let's turn our gaze to the Hamburg Major 2025 40k, a 5-round, 102 player event, held in Hamburg Germany, that on any other weekend would stand a good chance of being the biggest event of the week. Sebastian Müller with Groundzero Kiel went 5-0 and placed 2nd with his Gladius Task Force. You can see Sebastian's list both on BCP and below. DA: Der König der Möwen Lion Dad - Warlord Azrael Bladeguard Ancient Lieutenant in Phobos Armour Assault Intercessors with Jump Packs: 5 flying choppy boys Deathwing Knights: 5 awesome chonky macey boys Deathwing Knights: 5 awesome chonky macey boys Deathwing Knights: 5 awesome chonky macey boys Gladiator Lancer Gladiator Lancer Inner Circle Companions: 6 spooky awesome swordy boys Invader ATV Scout Squad: 5 sneaky lads Any list ...

Lists of the Week: LVO 2025

Good day battle brethren! Las Vegas Open, the biggest Warhammer 40K event of the year, was held this past weekend. Unfortunately, no Dark Angels lists were in particular danger of winning the event this year, but a number of Dark Angels lists did well enough to rate some attention, so I thought I'd dedicate an article specifically to them. I may wind up having to play catchup on the rest of the lists from last weekend that deserve our attention, but I promise not to overlook them. If you happen to go through the results from LVO yourself, the first entry you'll get to is Jeremy Atkinson's, who placed 37th. Unfortunately, when I clicked to see the list, it turned out to actually be an Ultramarines list. Boo! I bring it up so you brethren won't think I overlooked it. I'm going to review the lists that made it into the top 20% of the placings, which is a lot, plus the next one down after that because it's an Unforgiven Task Force, and it's just interesting to s...

Hello battle brethren! It's a new week, in which I have the privilege of reporting the results of the events that were held over the weekend. We didn't have any event winners, but we have seven lists that went X/0-X/1 to look at, a full five of which were played at the The NOTTINGHAM 40K SUPER-MAJOR held in Nottingham, England. This was a 5-round, 375 player event, so it's no surprise the majority of our lists came from it.  Unarguably the best performing Dark Angels list of the weekend was played by our own Toby Bennett of Black Crow Gaming, who put his money where is mouth is about the Stormlance Task Force and went 5-0 with it, placing 12th overall. You can see Toby's list on BCP. The short version is below. Happy New Year battle brethren! After a 2-week break for the holidays, we have had GTs take place once again! Despite us probably entering the beginnings of the Ultramarines meta (at least as far as top-performing Space Marine lists goes), some Dark Angels lists did place well at their events, including winning the biggest event of the weekend. I was a little disappointed to see that none of them were Lion's Blade or Company of Hunters lists, but only one of them was a Gladius. So, let's look at the lists that did well over the weekend! Our event-winning list topped the 2025 Glass City GT in Toledo OH, a 5-round, 100-player event. Zachary Morales took a Vanguard Spearhead and defeated all comers to take 1st place! You can see Zachary's list on BCP. The short version is below. Dark Knights Azrael - Warlord Librarian in Terminator Armor: The Blade Driven Deep Techmarine Assault Intercessors with Jump Packs: 5 flying choppy boys Assault Intercessors with Jump Packs: 5 flying ...

The New Year's State of the Chapter

Hello battle brethren! It's been a couple weeks without a major event (I looked on BCP), so I thought I'd take a little time to look back at how we did in 2024 and take a look at what we have to work with in the new year. The Year in Review It seems like forever ago, but at the beginning of 2024 we were using the Leviathan mission deck. The Ironstorm Spearhead with Azrael, a Darkshroud, and Stormravens and/or Repulsor Executioners were the most reliable high-performing DA lists. Our codex released in February and landed with a thud, with underwhelming dataslates for all of our most iconic units. Only Azrael and the Darkshroud saw much play in DA list. Ironstorms pretty much ruled the roost until the summer Balance Dataslate. That was when Games Workshop buffed Deathwing Knights and Inner Circle Companions. Maces of Redemption getting Anti-Monster/Vehicle 4+, DWK swords getting Damage 2, and ICCs' swords getting AP -2 were enough for the most common Dark Angels lists to sh...
