CaptainCon 2024 Grand Tournament

Welcome battle brothers! Thank you for taking the time to read my recounting of my experience attending the Grand Tournament at CaptainCon!

CaptainCon is a tabletop gaming convention held annually in Warwick Rhode Island, which is wicked convenient for me because it's well under an hour from my house. A variety of tabletop events were being held, but the Warhammer 40K GT was by far the largest, with 53 players in all.

This event was held right after the Balance Dataslate dropped, which obliged me to make some changes to my list. I took advantage of the opportunity to make some modest modifications I'd been thinking of since I took the list to an RTT the weekend before. I'll post the list in its entirety below, but the short version is as follows:

Azrael
Lieutenant - Enhancement: Champion of Humanity
Captain - Enhancement: Forged in Battle
Heavy Intercessor Squad: 5 chonky boys
Intercessor Squad: 5 objective-sticky boys
Devastator Squad: 4x multimeltas, Sergeant with power fist and plasma pistol
Devastator Squad: 4x multimeltas, Sergeant with power fist and plasma pistol
Eradicator Squad: 3 melty boys
Eradicator Squad: 3 melty boys
Hellblaster Squad: 10 plasma boys
Inceptor Squad: 3 plasma boys
Infernus Squad: 5 burny boys
Scout Squad: 5 sneaky boys
Land Raider
Razorback
Razorback
Impulsor
Impulsor

It hurt to take out one of the Inceptor Squads, but I found just having the one to be good enough, and I kept the one I've generally found to be more valuable - that D2/D3 damage profile really helps into a lot of targets. I replaced a squad of Infernus Marines with the Intercessor Squad because I had some notions of sending them in an Impulsor into lightly held objectives to flip them. I considered attaching a Librarian to them to give them an invulnerable save and give the unit a little more punch, but I decided to add a Captain to the Infernus Squad instead, because being able to play the 2 Command Point Immolation Protocols strat for 0 CP seemed good. With my list tweaked, I got up Saturday morning, put on my unicorn socks, and headed out for some 40K!

As per my usual routine, I'll write brief summaries of opponents' lists for discussion, and post their full versions at the bottom of the post.

For some reason, I seem to draw really skilled players the first round of every tournament I go to. At Winter Assault, my first round was against Sam Pope, who went on to place 2nd at LVO this year. This time around, my first game was against Cullen Burns of the US Army ESports Team, who went on to place 1rst at this event. Cullen was playing Aeldari, but not the meta list that just got slammed by the Balance Dataslate. Here's the short version of his list:

Autarch - Enhancement: The Phoenix Gem
Fuegam
Illic Nightspear
Karandras
Solitaire
Falcon
Falcon
Falcon
Fire Dragons: 5 melty elves
Fire Dragons: 5 melty elves
Fire Dragons: 5 melty elves
Rangers: 10 snipy elves
Shroud Runners: 6 elf bikes
Shroud Runners: 6 elf bikes
Striking Scorpions: 5 choppy elves
Swooping Hawks: 5 flying elves
Warp Spiders: 10 teleporting elves

We played Mission A: Take And Hold, with Search and Deploy deployment. Cullen opted for fixed secondaries, going with Bring It Down and Assassinate. I opted for tactical secondaries. Both of us are playing aggressive lists, but Cullen's was much faster than mine. He was able to keep me boxed into my deployment zone and picked my army apart with about an hour to spare. The final score was 88-44 in Cullen's favor.

That's not to say I didn't enjoy playing against Cullen, because I did. He was friendly and engaging, and it was funny to listen to him criticizing oversights on the part of the GW design team. As he was playing, he kept saying, "I can't believe they didn't increase this thing's points. I can't believe they didn't increase this other thing's points. I can't believe they didn't increase THIS thing's points."

One really interesting thing about Cullen's list is that it's well equipped to pick off characters. He used the Warp Spiders as bait to get me to hop my Hellblasters out of their Land Raider with Burning Vengeance so he could snipe out Azrael and my Lieutenant, and it only didn't work because I spiked my invulnerable saves. The Rangers are not the only snipers in the list - the Shroud Runners all have sniper rifles on them too, so they can fly to advantageous positions and pluck out characters. I've toyed with the idea of maybe making a list with 3 Eliminator Squads to try and snipe characters, but I doubt it would work as well as Cullen's.

For Game 2, I had the pleasure of playing against Ben Williams' Space Wolf Ironstorm Spearhead. Ben really likes Dreadnoughts and it shows in his army list - 9 all told, including Murderfang and Bjorn the Fell Handed. The quick-and-dirty version of his list is as follows:

Bjorn
Iron Priest - Enhancement: The Flesh is Weak
Iron Priest
Murderfang
Ballistus Dreadnought
Ballistus Dreadnought
SW Venerable Dreadnought
SW Venerable Dreadnought
Stormfang Gunship
Stormraven Gunship
Wulfen Dreadnought
Wulfen Dreadnought
Wulfen Dreadnought

We played Mission J, Priority Targets primary, Crucible of Battle deployment. Both of us played Tactical secondaries, though I almost certainly would have been better served playing Fixed secondaries.

Going into the game, I looked at all of Ben's Dreadnoughts, and I looked at all of the melta I have in my list, and I liked my chances. I had a strong opening, shooting down Ben's Stormraven first turn. It even did me the favor of exploding and doing a smattering of Mortal Wounds to practically everything in Ben's list. Unfortunately for me, I got overconfident and did not play well from there, allowing Ben to turn around a difficult first turn and fight his way to a well-earned win. The final score wound up being 94-51 in Ben's favor.

I'd shot down the Stormraven first turn because I was worried about having a face full of Murderfang, as he was riding in the Stormraven. However, unless I'm missing something, the Stormraven does not have the Assault Ramp rule, so I might have been more concerned than I needed to be. I think I might have been better served shooting down the Stormfang gunship instead, because that thing kept Overwatching my units with it's main gun's Torrent profile and picking up my guys on my turn. I definitely also overcommitted my Hellblasters in the first turn, and that cost me heavily.

I have to admit, I was pretty down on my list and the Firestorm detachment at this point, but I still had 3 games to play with it, so I resolved to just play as well as I could, and that was the mindset I had going into Game 3. I was also literally bleeding - I'd torn a hangnail or I cut myself on one of my datacards or something, and I had to go to the registration desk to get a bandage. Appropriately enough, the next army I played against was Derek Errigo's World Eaters! Here's the short version of Derek's list:

Lord Invocatus
World Eaters Lord on Juggernaut
World Eaters Master of Executions - Enhancement: The Berserker Glaive
Jakhals: 10 cannon fodder
Khorne Berserkers: 10 Zerks
Khorne Berserkers: 10 Zerks
World Eaters Rhino
Exalted Eightbound: 6 beefy Zerks
Exalted Eightbound: 3 beefy Zerks
Exalted Eightbound: 3 beefy Zerks
Khorne Lord of Skulls

We played Mission M, with the primary appropriately being Purge The Foe, and the Crucible of Battle deployment. I went with Tactical Secondaries, and Derek picked Fixed secondaries, choosing Deploy Teleport Homers and Engage On All Fronts.

I'm not ashamed to admit, I was not super-confident going into this game. Consequently, I think this was my best-played game of the weekend. For one thing, I didn't have Azrael and the Hellblasters get out of their Land Raider at the earliest opportunity, instead using the Land Raider to get them in position to be able to use their weapons to maximum effect. When I did deploy them, they took out the big unit of Exalted Eightbound and their attached character support. I also didn't try to contest too much of the table, instead concentrating the bulk of my forces where they needed to be.

Derek and I wound up swapping home objectives. He took mine with deep striking Exalted Eightbound, and I pushed onto his with my Intercessors. Derek walked away from the game with a healthy respect for Hellblasters and I walked away from the game with a healthy respect for Exalted Eightbound. Derek outscored me on Primary because he was able to destroy one of my Impulsors Turn 1, which gave him 8 points for killing a unit and killing more units than I did first turn. However, I outscored him on Secondary. The final score wound up being 86-85 in my favor. The best kind of game! Apparently I was rewarded for my blood offering before the game started!

That closed out my first day at the CaptainCon GT, and at least I was able to go out on a win. I drove home, hung out with my cat, watched an episode of Legacy of Monsters, and got a good night's sleep. The next day I got up bright and early, put on my socks (not the unicorn socks - eww!), and made my way back to Warwick for Day 2!

For my 4th game, I faced Nick Ramos' Ork Waagh! Tribe. We played Mission H, primary objective The Ritual, Hammer & Anvil deployment. Both of us played Tactical secondaries.

Here's the short version of Nick's list:

Ghazkull
Mek
Mozrog Skragbad on his land shark
Warboss
Warboss
Boyz: 10 Boyz
Boyz: 10 Boyz
Boyz: 10 Boyz
Trukk
Trukk
Battlewagon
Deff Dread
Deffkoptas: 3 whirlygigs
Flash Gitz: 10 gitz
Gretchin: 1 Runtherd, 10 weedy sprouts
Gretchin: 1 Runtherd, 10 weedy sprouts
Killa Kans: 3 weedy sprouts in metal pots
Meganobz: 6 chonky boys

The Ritual is the mission where there's only 1 No Man's Land objective at the start of the game, and during the course of the game units can take an action to set up another objective exactly 9" away from the center objective. Also, having units on the deployment zone objective does not score the player any Primary points, so I debated having my Heavy Intercessors come across the board, but I wound up leaving them on the No Man's Land objective so Nick wouldn't be able to get easy secondary points for dropping a unit on it if it was unattended. I got the first turn, so I was able to have my Scouts set up a second midfield objective in my 1rst turn. I used the terrain to my advantage, plugging the chokepoint in the center of the table with my Land Raider and keeping most of my units to one side of it, only deploying/moving my Impulsor full of Intercessors on the other side to oblige Nick to commit some units to that side.

I thought about setting up a No Man's Land objective on the other side of the chokepoint to divert some of Nick's units, but by Turn 4 things were going well enough for me that I set up a second one on my strong side of the board and scored 15 points on Primary that turn, scoring 45 points on Primary for the game overall. I did well on secondaries too. I hung onto Capture Enemy Outpost for 2 turns before scoring it Turn 4, and it occurs to me I probably would have been better off discarding it, but I scored 37 on Secondaries.

For his part, Nick had a hard time bringing the full weight of his army's killing power to bear because of the terrain and the honking great Land Raider (and one of my Impulsors) I parked in the chokepoint in the center. Mozrog did eventually pick up the Land Raider, but it took him a couple turns. That let me bring the full weight of my army's killing power against manageable portions of his, which worked in my favor. Nick also forgot about trying to score Primary, only doing so in the last turn. Instead, he concentrated on getting stuck in, which was very Orky, but it didn't do his score any good.

Nick is friends with my opponent from the previous game Derek. At one point, Derek came over, pointed at my Hellblasters, and said "Kill those guys!" Which was good advice for sure. Nick was able to kill them by committing a squad of Boyz and his Killa Kans to them when they were already stuck in with Ghazkull. Unfortunately he activated his Boyz first and killed everybody but Azrael, and he wasn't able to consolidate his Kans into Azrael to swing because their bases were too big to fit in the gap. That let Azrael swing before Ghaz, and Ghaz was already on his last wounds. Nick did kill a lot of stuff, but in the end that exchange swung in my favor. The final score wound up being 92-38 in my favor.

My final game of the GT was against Joseph Shostak's Imperial Knights. As it turns out, the CaptainCon GT was Joe's very first tournament ever, and like me he was 2-2 going into the final round. We played Mission I, which was Take and Hold Primary with Hammer and Anvil deployment, with the wrinkle of the Hidden Supplies rule, which meant there were 6 objectives on the table with 4 of them being in No Man's Land. Both of us elected to use Fixed Secondaries. I obviously took Bring It Down, and supplemented it with Deploy Teleport Homer. Joe also took Bring It Down, and
also took Assassination, which makes sense because he did not have any units he could afford to tie up doing actions to score him points.

Joe's list is as follows:

Canis Rex
Knight Castellan
Knight Crusader
Armiger Helverin
Armiger Helverin
Armiger Warglaive
Armiger Warglaive

I knew at the start of this game I was going to have to weather a storm of fire to close the distance into effective range for my guns, so I didn't overcommit early in an attempt to do damage. I tried to do a bit with the long range guns on the Razorbacks, but that didn't amount to much. I saved my CP for the first 2 turns to spend on Joe's turn, both playing Smokescreen and Armor of Contempt on the vehicle I least wanted Nick to destroy, with the first being one of the Razorbacks, and then the Land Raider.

I actually didn't deploy the Hellblasters out of the Land Raider until Turn 3, because I knew I was going to have to get them within 6" to use the Crucible of Battle strat to give them +1 to wound on one of the big Knights, so in the second turn I concentrated on the smaller Knights, picking up both Warglaives and getting one of the Helverins down to 1 wound. Then on Joe's turn a Razorback within 6" of that Helverin exploded, taking that last wound, so by my 3rd turn Joe was down to his 3 big Knights and the last Helverin.

On my 3rd turn Azrael and the Hellblasters came out, and my Reserves came in. I tasked my Hellblasters to picking up the Crusader and my Eradicators to picking up his Castellan, while I just had my Inceptors deploy homers in Joe's deployment zone. Eventually, I wound up tabling Joe's army, though he certainly exacted a toll in return. The final score wound up being 98-48 in my favor.

One last point - during the course of this game, I learned that the Crucible of Battle strat can be used in the Fight phase as well as the Shooting phase. I'm kicking myself for not noticing this earlier.

With that, I ended the weekend on a high note and for the first time I came out of a GT with a winning record! Not only that, but I was the top Dark Angels player! Mind you, it also appears I was the ONLY Dark Angels player. I'll acknowledge luck was certainly a factor in ending the weekend with a winning record, but my own playing was as well, as was my list. Speaking of the list, I'm not as down on the Firestorm Assault Force as I was after my second game. I still don't think it's the current power detachment, not as long as players can use Guerilla Tactics on Centurion Devastators in the Vanguard Spearhead, and for that matter the Ironstorm Spearhead also edges out the Firestorm. However, the Firestorm does have its good points. It may just be that I'm finally learning to use it well.

As far as list composition goes, the package of Azrael, the Hellblasters, and the Land Raider is the beating heart of the list. I do a lot better when I use them well then when I just YOLO them out on the first turn. Switching the Razorbacks to lascannons also gives me enough long-range firepower where I might reasonably expect to pick something up from a distance if I focus all 6 of my list's lascannons on it. I managed to pick up a Trukk from across the table that way in my 4th game The Razorbacks' storm bolter is sufficient to generate the hit I need to grant the Fire Support rule to the multimelta Devastators. Learning to use the Scout move on my Scouts is helping to keep them alive and let them do things for me past the first turn. I'm also learning sometimes it pays to hold off on committing reserves till the 3rd turn to let more space open up to bring them in where they'll do the most good.

To talk about the most recent additions, adding the Captain to the Infernus Squad is a good investment. Being able to pop Immolation Protocols for free makes Infernus Marines much more effective. Being able to rely on the unit to generate at least a few Devastating Wounds when I need them really ups their utility.

Also, I found the Impulsor full of Intercessors to be surprisingly effective. I added the Intercessors for their OC 2. I had notions of sending their Impulsor towards a lightly held objective, having them get out on it, then tying up the unit on the objective by assaulting it with the Impulsor, which is why my Impulsors wound up with shield domes instead of missile arrays. Also, the ability to sticky objectives was relevant in at least 2 games. Being able to shoot 10 AP -1 shots out of the firing deck of the Impulsor was not to be sneezed at. And, in the Firestorm, within 12" that shooting is Strength 5.

I'd like to thank Jon Dell Isola for running the event. People like him help make the community of 40K players possible. I thoroughly enjoyed the event and all the games I played. I'd also like to thank all my opponents I played against over the weekend. Gentlemen, all of you helped make the event a delight to attend. I hope I was a good opponent for you as well, both as a competitor and as a sportsman. With that, dear battle brothers, I will thank you for reading and wish you fun and success in your 40K endeavors!
