Unit Review: Tactical Squads

Image
What are WE doing out of the case? This is an article I didn't expect to be writing. I don't think I've touched a Tac Squad since 7th edition, when Games Workshop introduced the Battle Company detachment that gave Space Marine players free transports if their lists had the requisite numbers of Tac, Dev, and Assault Squads. 8th edition saw the release of the first of the Primaris units, and since then Primaris units have been taking over the roles of Firstborn units. Some Firstborn datasheets happen to be aggressively costed, or synergize well with detachment rules or whatnot, but by and large Firstborn units have been vanishing from army lists. So, when Games Workshop dropped the cost of a Tactical Squad to 140 points, I didn't initially think much of it.  However, I was invited to be a guest on the  Path To Redemption blog , one of the hosts (Heath) asked me what I thought of it. I admitted I hadn't, and then I had to stop and think about it, and I realized at 140 ...

Munitorum Field Manual Changes

Image
Hello battle brothers! The new Munitorum Field Manual points went live this morning (4/25/2024), so I thought I might bring the changes to your attention and give my opinion of them.  Games Workshop handed out points changes to us with a fairly light hand, which I suppose is good, but I don't think they did enough to lift our armies win rates up into the 45%-55% Goldilocks zone they purport to aim for. They did take aim at our dominant list, the Ironstorm, but they didn't do any points drops that are likely to lead to something rising in its stead.  Anyway, that's enough teasing. Here's what changed. I'm going to lump both Dark Angels and Space Marines stuff together, and group them into what went down and what went up. Beside the units, I'll put how much their points changed by. First, the fun bit.  Deathwing Knights:                215         (-20) Deathwing Terminators:       180/360...

Lists of the Week: Top Performers Roundup 4/22/2024

Image
I'm going up in points soon! Hello battle brothers! Once again, I'm here to bring you the news of the Dark Angels lists that performed well over the weekend. As you may have guessed from the article photo, the high performing lists are all double Storm Raven Ironstorm lists that have been propping up the competitive win rates for Dark Angels in the meta. As they're all so similar, I'm going to show them all to you together and then discuss the particulars, rather than discussing them all individually. We'll start with Kit Smith Hanna's list. Kit was the pioneer of the Dark Angels double Storm Raven Ironstorm, and he continues to be a contender at major events in Texas, in this case going 5-1 to score 4th place out of a 77-player field at The Wardome GT in New Caney. Kit's list Ironstorm Spearhead Azrael Techmarine: Target Augury Web Techmarine: Master of the Machine War Techmarine: Adept of the Omnissiah Assault Intercessor with Jump Pack Squad: 5 jump pack ...

Newbie's Guide - Getting Started with Dark Angels

Image
The Dark Angels Combat Patrol Hello new battle brothers! You have chosen to begin your journey as a Dark Angels player, because you are discerning player of excellent taste, and the Dark Angels are the coolest army in 40K. Who can resist the combination of lore with a little darkness to it, an air of mystery, the knightly aesthetic, and robes? Welcome to the First Legion. Just make sure to ixnay on the egion-lay thing around other Imperial forces. They get jealous that they don't get to have legions anymore, and there's no sense in making them sad. In all seriousness, It's always exciting to be at the beginning of one's adventure into a 40K army, but it can also be daunting. There are a lot of rules for a new player to absorb, and a wide array of choices when making your initial purchases. People's time and money are limited resources, so it's only natural to want to get the most return on them possible. I'd like to offer a potential path to act as a guide...

1 List, 27 Bikes

Hello battle brothers! It was a slow weekend for us, with no Dark Angels lists popping up in the lists that placed highly on the Meta Monday roundup, so I thought it would be a good time for an article about my new list. I've been enjoying my Firestorm Assault Force list, but I have been wanting to play a list with a little more DA flair to it. Unfortunately, our codex supplement is pretty lackluster when it comes to our unique units and detachments, but there is one bright spot, and that's being able to attach Ravenwing Command Squads to other mounted units. So, I decided to build a list around that. Here's the short version of the list: Gladius Task Force - 1980 points Azrael Ravenwing Command Squad - Enhancement: Fire Discipline Ravenwing Command Squad - Enhancement: The Honour Vehement Ravenwing Knights: 6 awesome bikers Ravenwing Knights: 6 awesome bikers Outrider Squad: 3 bikers Outrider Squad: 3 bikers Outrider Squad: 3 bikers Intercessor Squad: 5 bolter boys Incepto...

Lists of the Week: Top Performers Roundup 4/8/24

Hello, battle brothers! It was a busy weekend for events, and as a result there are a lot of Dark Angels lists that performed well. I thought instead of focusing on one of them, I'd touch on all the ones that appeared in the Meta Monday roundup. The usual Ironstorm Spearheads are well represented, but there were a few surprises. Let's start with Cam Hawkins' list. Cam took a Dark Angels Ironstorm Spearhead to 1rst place at the Iron Cage GT: Bedford Beatdown in Bedford TX, a 56 player, 5-round event. As you may have guessed from the article photo, Cam took the double Stormraven list that's been making the rounds. Here's a quick look at the list. Azrael Techmarine: Target Augury Web Techmarine: Adept of the Omnissiah Techmarine: Master of the Machine War Ravenwing Darkshroud Redemptor Dreadnought Redemptor Dreadnought Redemptor Dreadnought Scout Squad: 5 sneaky lads Scout Squad: 5 sneaky lads Storm Speeder Thunderstrike Stormraven Gunship Stormraven Gunship Callidus ...
